KMT PARTY
The KMT party (led by Chiang Kai Shek) originated from the Chinese Nationalist Party of mainland China. After their defeat in the Chinese Civil War by the People's Republic of China headed by Mao Zedong, Kuomintang affiliates and supporters fled China to Taiwan, at the time a small independent island that garnered freedom from Japan after their loss in WWII. Once in Taiwan, the KMT party enacted martial law. In this installment, the native, oppressed Taiwanese and the new "KMT Taiwanese" developed opposition, not only in their leadership. The KMT party considered itself the "true" Republic of China, and wished to reunify with the mainland. The native Taiwanese citizens sought to retain their independence from any other foreign nations as a separate country, and therefore conflicted in their perception of identification.
While the martial law the KMT imposed on Taiwan has ended, the KMT party in Taiwan still remains as a prevalent political party. The KMT party and the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) remain as the two largest political factions in Taiwan.
