INTRODUCTION
To reach its current form, Taiwan's culture has progressed through stages of adaptation and integration from multiple cultures, due to the consistent shifts of political occupation. The influx of people into Taiwan brought new concepts, ideas, and perspectives to Taiwan. Different forms and aspects of poetry, literature, philosophy, psychology, and multi-media were absorbed into Taiwanese culture from the Japanese, Kuomintang, and Western influences. While some of these influences confined Taiwanese culture from flourishing (such as the domination of language during the KMT era), each subsequent era brought rise to new freedoms which allowed Taiwan to expand its conventions, which, in some elements, are retained in today's Taiwanese customs. However, each of these presences in Taiwan contributed to the amalgamation of culture which constituted the basis of modern Taiwanese and Taiwanese-American identity and development, which I will investigate further in this report.
